Taranaki Falls
A 2-3 hour walk through virgin mountain beech forest and open tussock country takes you to these spectacular falls where the Whakapapa River falls 20m over a lava flow from an eruption of Mt Ruapehu 15000 years ago.
Silica Rapids
A 2-3 hour walk initially on the Whakapapaiti Track leads you through a mountain beech forest to the creamy white Silica Rapids terraces. Return the same way or via the Bruce Road.
Tama Lakes Track
A 5-6 hour walk past Taranaki Falls towards Waihohonu Hut takes you to two explosion crater remnant lakes and the saddle that forms the water shed between east and west in the park. You will notice the dry desert conditions in the east if you have good weather and views.
