The 42 Traverse Track has been described as the best ride in the North Island and gets its name from "State Forest 42", the old name for the bush that it travels through.
It is ridden from Kapoors Rd, 16km from National Park Village, to Owhango, 13km south of Taumarunui. Descending 520m over approximately 45km of old forest road it crosses a number of streams that can be impassable after rainfall and with spring snowmelt. It can be really muddy too so it is best ridden in summer and autumn. Check the weather conditions first. It is a long ride back up the hill from the Waione Stream!
This is a remote ride and it is expected that you should know how to read a map and navigate. We also recommend carrying a personal locator beacon for emergencies. These can be hired from Adventure Shuttles.
The trail is graded intermediate grade 3 and the few short technical bits can be easily walked. Be warned – even though it is mostly downhill there are a couple of solid climbs and so a good level of fitness is required.
